The French Forum for Open and Distance Learning has initiated the creation of a European forum made up of similar structures in some sixteen European countries including European Union Member States with the aim of setting up within two years a federation on a European level providing a privileged network for the exchange and promotion of European expertise in Open & Distance Learning and Educational Multimedia.
A first conference was held in UTRECHT (NL) from March 24th to 26th. At this conference was lauched the European Federation for Open and Distance Learning.
The European Federation for Open and Distance Learning (E.F.ODL) constitution as an international association under the Belgium law has been signed by the founding members on 21st October 1998.
The European Federation for Open and Distance Learning is now a member of the ODL Liaison Comittee, set up by the European Commission as an advising comittee regrouping several european associations representing ODL stakeholders.

The fffod takes part with active support of its members in conferences in France and abroad, and proposes to its members to take part in various social events (to have more details about fffod activities, see also the internal newsletter pages "la lettre du fffod").

Between the 13 January 1998 and the 24 June 1999, the fffod organises with other partners the Open University of the Information Society and the Networks, which consisted in about 200 events, conference, workshops... The content of these events is accessible on the fffod website, via the Open University programme pages.
From 1st to 4th December 1998, the fffod was at the EDUCATEC 98 exhibition, on the FORM'ENTREPRISES platform, together with several of its members.
In April 1999, the fffod was a member of the TELEFORM'99 Jury for the best Intranet for Training in Marseille. The fffod become an official partner of TELEFORM 2000.
From 19th & 20th May 1999, fffod participated in theTOP RF99 conference in Paris
From 24th to 28th November 1999, fffod was at the Salon de lEducation Educatec 99 - Formentreprise, Porte de Versailles, Paris.
On 1st et 2nd March 2000, fffod participated in the TOP RF2000 conference in Paris.
